Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • ½ cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt (for dumplings)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk (plus more if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for finishing)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 4–5 minutes until softened. Stir in the chopped cabbage along with salt, pepper, and caraway seeds (if using). Cook for approximately 10–12 minutes until the cabbage wilts down. Pour in vegetable broth or water, cover the pot, and let it simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture, then add one egg and gradually pour in milk while stirring until a soft dough forms. If needed, add more milk to achieve the desired consistency.
  3. Gently drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering cabbage mixture, ensuring they are spaced apart for even cooking. Cover tightly with a lid and steam for about 10–12 minutes until the dumplings are cooked through.
  4. Once cooked, gently stir in one tablespoon of butter into the cabbage mixture. Serve hot from the stove.
