  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp fine salt (for frosting)
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream, room temperature
  • Electric green gel food coloring (for decoration)
  • Black gel food coloring (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans with greaseproofing.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat unsalted butter until creamy; gradually add granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then mix in buttermilk, vegetable oil, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  5. Gently combine the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until smooth.
  6. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes completely before frosting with cream cheese buttercream.
