  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 4 large Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (for garnish)
  • Extra Parmesan cheese (for garnish)
  • Crispy fried onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté sliced onions in butter and olive oil until golden brown.
  2. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by caramelized onions and half the cheeses. Repeat the layers.
  4. Mix cream with seasonings and pour over the layered ingredients.
  5. Bake covered for 30 minutes; uncover and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes until golden.
