  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened, for frosting)
  • 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (about 1 large lemon, for frosting)
  • Lemon slices for garnish
  • Lemon zest for garnish

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and combine it with instant yeast in a small bowl; let it froth for 5 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, sugar, lemon zest, melted butter, salt, and half of the flour.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and gradually mix in the remaining flour until a soft dough forms; knead until smooth.
  4. Allow the dough to rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread softened butter over it, then sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and lemon zest.
  6. Roll tightly into a log and cut into 12 pieces; place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Let rise again for about 1 hour while preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake for approximately 28 minutes until golden brown.
  9. For frosting, beat together cream cheese, softened butter, powdered sugar, salt, and lemon juice until smooth; frost warm rolls before serving.
