Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp water/cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two round baking pans by greasing them and lining the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
  3. In another bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together unsalted butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients in three parts, alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  6. Melt bittersweet chocolate in a microwave or double boiler. Allow it to cool slightly before folding into half of the cake batter.
  7. Divide the plain batter into two bowls. Add black gel icing color to one bowl and mix thoroughly. Layer spoonfuls of both batters into prepared pans. Use a knife or skewer to swirl them together gently for a marble effect.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let them cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to cooling racks.
  9. In another bowl, beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and water or cream until desired consistency is reached.
  10. Once cakes are completely cool, frost between layers using frosting made earlier. Cover the top and sides lavishly with frosting. Melt red candy melts with heavy cream in the microwave; drizzle over the cake like blood. Finish with sprinkles for that spooky touch!
