Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 5 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
- 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter
- 8 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 5–7 tbsp water/cream
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Black gel icing color
- Red gel icing color
- 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
- 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two round baking pans by greasing them and lining the bottoms with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
- In another bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together unsalted butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients in three parts, alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
- Melt bittersweet chocolate in a microwave or double boiler. Allow it to cool slightly before folding into half of the cake batter.
- Divide the plain batter into two bowls. Add black gel icing color to one bowl and mix thoroughly. Layer spoonfuls of both batters into prepared pans. Use a knife or skewer to swirl them together gently for a marble effect.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let them cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to cooling racks.
- In another bowl, beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and water or cream until desired consistency is reached.
- Once cakes are completely cool, frost between layers using frosting made earlier. Cover the top and sides lavishly with frosting. Melt red candy melts with heavy cream in the microwave; drizzle over the cake like blood. Finish with sprinkles for that spooky touch!
