  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon zest
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup cold salted butter
  • 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 to 1 1/4 cups fresh blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for topping
  • Coarse or turbinado sugar for sprinkling
  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar for glaze
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice for glaze

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, lemon zest, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Grate cold butter into the dry ingredients and toss to combine.
  4. Gently fold in fresh blueberries.
  5. Add buttermilk and lemon juice, stirring until just combined.
  6. Turn out onto a floured surface and pat into a rectangle about 15×3 inches thick.
  7. Cut into triangular wedges and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar.
  9. Bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. In a mixing bowl, whisk powdered sugar and lemon juice together to prepare the glaze.
  11. Once cooled, drizzle glaze over scones and serve.
