Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces pasta (fettuccine or spaghetti)
  • 2 large onions (thinly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 cup white apple vinegar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook for about 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally until onions are golden brown.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  4. If using, pour in white apple vinegar to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits. Simmer for a few minutes until most vinegar evaporates.
  5. Add broth and cream to the skillet; stir well and simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Stir in grated Parmesan cheese until melted; season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Toss cooked pasta with the sauce until evenly coated.
  8. Serve garnished with fresh parsley and additional Parmesan if desired.
